Industry Gets Boost with Rail Okay,
Sees Upcoming Session Hopeful
The construction industry got a
tardy but welcomed boost when the
City contractor for the rail project
recently signed a $1.4 billion contract
for production of the rail vehicles for the
system.
The signing delay was due to concern
with Ansaldo Honolulu JV’s fiscal
issues. It held up City approval until
Ansaldo provided satisfactory bonding
and other guarantees The rail decision
intact, the construction work force feels
assured of a decline soon in benchwarmers
for all crafts.
In other sectors, decisions remain
pending on the massive Ho‘opili development
and the Hawaii Community
Development Authority’s “690 Pohukaina”
mixed use transit-oriented project.
Both developments are being backed by
construction unions and builder groups.
Also being monitored is the Reapportionment
Commission’s actions on
the lawsuits filed for an additional Senate
seat for the Big Island. Proponents
contend non-resident military/their
dependents as well as the non-resident
students should be counted as part of
the total population.
The Hawaii Building Trades Council
is finalizing its legislative priorities
for the next state session, hopeful of an
improved economy. Reader input is welcomed.
